University of Southern Maine
9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Reception)

The Maine Symposium on Higher Education, whose theme is “Maine’s Economic Imperative–Building a Globally Competitive Workforce,” will be held at USM’s Abromson Center in Portland on Thursday, August 9.

The Symposium opens with a distinguished panel of CEOs discussing the importance of a highly educated workforce and actions they are taking to support their worker’ education. The panel is followed by workshops on two Compact strategies that offer employers practical steps to support their workers.

The afternoon program shifts to Maine’s future workforce, with a presentation of the Mitchell Institute’s Barriers 2 report that analyzes college enrollment trends, barriers to college facing traditional students, and promising practices.

The program concludes with a panel of Maine’s education leaders, moderated by the Speaker of the House, discussing the challenges they face in achieving the Compact’s goal of 40,000 new degree holders by 2020.
