"Linking Mastery to College Readiness: Exploring the Relationship Between State Mastery Exams and College Board Assessments"
April 19, 2007
New England Regional Office of the College Board
10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) and the New England Regional Office of The College Board organized this event to provide a special conversation and work session for Chief State School Officers, State Higher Education Executives and their chief Data/Assessment staff members.

Special guest Thanos Patelis, The College Board’s Vice President for Analysis, addressed potential strategies and opportunities for exploring the relationship between state high school mastery exams and The College Board’s assessments, including the PSAT/NMSQT, SAT I, SAT II, and AP examinations.

As part of its College Ready New England initiative, NEBHE is working with the six New England states and its key partners, including The College Board, to better define college and career readiness.  One key issue that leaders in K-12 and higher education encounter is the extent of relationship between high school mastery or “exit” exams and those assessments, such as admissions tests that are reliably used to gauge college readiness, as well as assessments used for college course placement after a student is admitted.

This discussion meeting addressed such issues and described past examples and potential opportunities for linking state mastery exams and College Board Assessments in an effort to better understand and measure college readiness.
